9.11.01 never forget

I was in the shower. It was my freshman year of college. Two days before I turned 18. I was finally an adult. My best friend, who is still my best friend today, ran into the bathroom and yelled at me to get out of the shower and turn on the TV. We both stood and watched in shock as the plane hit the second tower. We didn’t make it to our 9am class or any other class that day. I sat on my bed in my dorm room for 12 hours straight and watched CNN. I ended up moving to New York City two years later to finish my college career. I owe a lot to that city and the people. I remember the first time I visited Ground Zero – the air is thick there, almost like you can feel the souls. I got chills the first time, and every time I’ve been there since. There is no question that September 11th, 2001 changed all of our lives. Each of us lost a bit of innocence on that day. My perspective of the world changed, and I’m sure yours did too. But, it is important to move forward. It is important to show that we are resilient and strong. Fear is a strong emotion, but we cannot let fear own us. It is important to remember, and never forget…but it is just as important to move on. Today, I’ll be enjoying one of my favorite things – a college football game. There is no doubt that when the Longhorns come running out of the tunnel with the American flag I will get a little emotional. The emotions are still there even if we have moved on. We are changed, we are different, we will be okay…this is America – the land of the free, the home of the brave.
